5 Essential Safety Tips for Buying from Classified Ads in Pakistan

Classified ads are a great way to find deals, but you need to stay safe. Follow these essential guidelines every single time you buy from a stranger online in Pakistan.

Buying from classified ads is one of the best ways to find great deals in Pakistan. But meeting strangers to exchange money and goods carries real risks if you are not careful. Here are five essential safety practices that every buyer must follow.

1. Always Meet in a Public Place

Never agree to meet a seller at a secluded location, their home in a quiet area, or an industrial location. Always insist on meeting at a public, well-lit location with other people around.

Good meeting spots:

  • The parking lot of a well-known restaurant or shopping centre
  • A petrol station on a busy main road
  • A bank branch (sellers with nothing to hide have no objection)
  • A busy commercial street or market area
  • A police station (some even have dedicated OLX/classifieds meeting spots)

For high-value purchases like cars, expensive electronics, or jewellery, consider meeting specifically at a bank or police station. Daytime meetings are always safer than evenings.

2. Bring Someone With You

Do not go alone for any significant purchase. Bring a friend, family member, or trusted colleague. Having someone else present deters potential scammers, gives you a second opinion on the item's condition, and is simply safer.

If you cannot bring someone, at least tell a trusted person where you are going, who you are meeting, and when you expect to be back. Share the seller's contact number with them.

3. Inspect Everything Thoroughly Before Paying

Never pay for an item without inspecting it in person first.

For mobile phones:

  • Check IMEI on PTA website before you arrive
  • Test all buttons, cameras, speakers, and charging port
  • Check screen for dead pixels and burns
  • Verify battery health
  • Ensure iCloud or Google account is removed

For vehicles:

  • Take a test drive and listen for unusual sounds
  • Check all panel gaps for signs of accident repair
  • Have a trusted mechanic inspect before buying
  • Verify registration book matches chassis number

For electronics:

  • Test all functions and ports
  • Check for signs of water damage
  • Verify all accessories are original

Be very suspicious of any seller who rushes you, will not let you inspect properly, or makes excuses about why you cannot test something.

4. Never Send Money or Pay in Advance

This is the single most common classified ads scam in Pakistan. A seller claims to be in another city and asks for a deposit or full payment via bank transfer, Easypaisa, or JazzCash before you see the item. Once they receive the money, they disappear.

The rule is absolute: never pay until you physically have the item in your hands and have inspected it. Legitimate sellers will always allow inspection before payment. If someone insists on advance payment or a "holding deposit", walk away immediately.

5. Verify Documents for Vehicles and Property

For vehicles:

  • Check registration book matches the chassis number stamped on the vehicle
  • Use Punjab MTMIS, Sindh Excise, or KPK Excise portal to verify ownership
  • Check for outstanding token tax, fines, or insurance claims
  • Verify the seller's CNIC matches the registration book

For property:

  • Never pay any amount without a lawyer verifying title documents
  • Visit the property registry office to verify ownership
  • Check for outstanding utility bills and property taxes
  • Visit the property multiple times at different times of day

Taking these five precautions consistently will significantly reduce your risk when buying through classified ads. The vast majority of sellers on AdZone are genuine and honest — but these practices protect you in every transaction.
